Best of 2022: Film
2022 was yet another weird year for the film industry. On the one hand, blockbusters returned in a big way, with Top Gun Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and others, making big bank at the box office. But overall, audiences largely shied away from theaters, and the economics of the direct-to-streaming continued to be a source of concern. All that said, it seemed like at least a step or two back to normalcy, and even if audiences didn’t always embrace them, we got plenty of great new films this year, including Tar, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Woman King, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Aftersun, and more.
