TOP 10: Reasons We’ll Miss Drake Hogestyn

BY Bob Erlenback

Drake Hogestyn passed away yesterday, September 28, 2024, leaving behind an incredible legacy as a soap-opera icon. While he may not have been the most versatile actor, he was perfectly cast as John Black, a role he embodied for 38 years. He first appeared on “Days of Our Lives” in 1986, initially as an amnesiac who believed himself to be Roman Brady. He arrived at Salem University Hospital, badly disfigured from an accident. After some intense plastic surgery, apparent chest hair plugs (real Roman had none), and typical Stefano DiMera meddling, he was revealed to be "Roman."

However, after much drama and several revelations, it was determined that John was not Roman Brady. Instead, John had his own rich backstory full of mystery and intrigue, as the show embraced its tradition of espionage and secret-agent plots. Over the years, John's true identity has shifted multiple times. He has been a mercenary named Forrest Alamain, the son of the villainous Stefano DiMera, and even a priest. His backstory was frequently rewritten or rediscovered, a hallmark of the evolving soap-opera world.

John Black’s adventures on “Days of Our Lives” included some of the most daring and supernatural storylines, such as brainwashing, demonic possession, battles with Stefano, and even a few resurrections after being presumed dead. Hogestyn’s smoldering good looks, muscular build, and distinctive whispering voice made him the perfect fit for this enigmatic and beloved character.

With his passing, we at The Great Pop Culture Debate wanted to honor him in our own way. Though his resume was defined by John Black, making it challenging to curate a Top 10 list of other roles, we’ve put together a Top 10 photo gallery of Drake in various looks over the years — including, of course, a few shirtless shots, because... well, reasons.

Please enjoy, and feel free to leave us comments with your favorite John Black storylines or Drake Hogestyn memories.
