Cheers & Jeers: 2025 Golden Globe Television Nominations
BY Kevin Dillon
The Golden Globes have always been known to do their own thing on the television side — well, they did, especially back in the day. This was the organization that gave Party of Five a Best Drama win, or had the UK’s version of The Office winning Best Comedy Series. They have honored some newer TV performers like Kerri Russell for Felicity or Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
The thing I have historically appreciated about this organization is that a lot of its nominees and winners felt fresh and different from the rubber stamp of any other group that gave out television awards (even if they did give their Best Comedy/Musical Series award to Mozart in the Jungle one year…). The Globes, in a way, have acted as a discovery tool, or helped save television shows from cancellation with their acclaim and recognition.
I am glad the Globes have moved forward with more, shall we say, upstanding practices, and they have evolved their membership. This year's nominees on the TV side feel like a mix of the old and new voting styles. The Jackal on Peacock received nominations for Drama Series, and Eddie Redmayne for Best Actor feels a bit like the old Globes -- a new celebrity vehicle that gets the word out about a new show, and these nominations will push more people to check it out. On the other hand, the old Globes may have dumped The Bear, or given it fewer nominations for its weaker Season 3, but instead the actual Globes gave the show five nominations (see below for my jeers).
So while it’s nice to see some new blood in the mix, a lot of these nominees feel a bit more industry-approved as opposed to the exciting discoveries that we used to get from the Globes for their television awards. Both approaches are still present, and there are great nominees to celebrate for the 2025 edition — the awards will be given out Sunday, January 5, on CBS/Paramount+, hosted by Nikki Glaser — but there are also some real headscratchers.
See below for my cheers and jeers for the TV nominations for the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

CHEERS & JEERS: 2025 Golden Globe Film Nominations
CHEERS: Nobody Wants This Gets 3 Nominations
Netflix’s new series Nobody Wants This getting some Globes love feels like a blend of let’s-elevate-the-new-show, while also honoring something first, which is incredibly exciting. The show received nominations for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, for Best Actor for Adam Brody, and Best Actress for Kristen Bell. This show was fantastic and had a great firstseason, and it’s exciting to see it make the cut, and be launched into more awards conversations.
JEERS: The Bear gets 5 Nominations
I will start by saying Liza Colon-Zayas is a fantastic nominee, and I am glad she got here. I will also avoid the, “This show is not a comedy” rant. It’s in these categories, and I have made peace with that. This is more about the quality of the third season of The Bear, which was all around a mess, and so inconsistent. This feels more like a reflexive reaction for a much-hyped show with an off season that should have received fewer nominations .
CHEERS to these Performance Nominations:
Kathryn Hahn in Agatha All Along The show should have more nominations, including for Patti LuPone and Joe Locke, but Hahn is fantastic in this series, and it’s great to see her get the nomination.
Kathy Bates in Matlock This new CBS series is fantastic, one of those great procedural programs blended with depth that CBS often invests in, and Bates is perfection in this role. It’s honestly a great last role for her, allowing her to highlight her warmth, humor, and dramatic acting chops.
Jake Gyllenhall in Presumed Innocent What is happening to this show?! How is Jake the only nominee? He gave such a fantastic performance, and I was so glad he got a nomination here. But we should have seen more nominations for the show, as well as Ruth Negga and Peter Skarsgaard. It feels like Apple is dropping the ball promoting this one.
Cristin Milioti in The Penguin What a bold and audacious performance. I always feel like the Globes have a genre bias around fantasy and sci-fiction (missing in the nominations were shows like Fallout, and House of the Dragon only had an acting nomination), but they went for a Gotham City rooted in realism and I am glad they nominated this performance. Milioti has been such a terrific actress for so many years, and it’s great to see her finally get her due. I think she can actually win this.
Keira Knightley in Black Doves I am glad I watched this show this past weekend so I can champion the show and Knightley’s performance. It’s great to get more Keira on my screen, and she is perfect in this show. This performance is fun, Knightley gets to do some cool action, she is very funny, and does some great dramatic work. I really like this nomination.
JEERS to Snubbing The English Teacher
The English Teacher represents the type of show the Globes should have been all over, but it appears that they only had room for one show that was not a previous Emmy nominee this year. I am sorry, The Gentlemen getting a lone nomination is a joke. Brian Jordan’s Alvarez’s incredibly funny FX sitcom is one of the best of the year, and I hope it picks up steam at the Emmy Awards so that the Globes look stupid.
Overall there were a few exciting new nuggets in this nomination mix, although most of the excitement comes from new limited series, and less on the series side. I would challenge the Globe voters on the television side to put in some effort next year.
